Peer Review Project 2

Alex Murray- I admire the combination of typography to create an image of a human skeletal face structure. This design is very creative and appears simple but is complex to design in code. It conveys a futuristic appearance with the color choice. It looks unfinished but has potential to be perfect in time.

Dave Goldhahn-I really like where Dave is going with this design. Though it is unfinished, I can see him adding more of a path with the words and extending it as the user scrolls down. I think the color choice is perfect for the Futuristic Movement. I like the shadow on the title of the page. His layout is one of my favorites.

EXERCISE 5

Students will be given a code with errors that they must identify and correct.

This is a hand out and does not need to be put on the blog.

Exercise 4

PROBLEMS WITH TYPOGRAPHY ON THE WEB?

-Until a few years ago, typography on the web was limited to about 20 fonts.

-Designers need to select certain font families on the web because many of the users will not have the fonts accessible on their computers, therefore it makes it hard for other users to clearly read type and see the full page layout of how the type code is meant to be.

-A Designer should use fronts from such places as: TypeKit, Google Fonts or Dafonts.

Exercise 3

Compare Tables to Grids:

Benefits of HTML Table:

Tables are easier to implement compared to CSS layout grids. Tables increase almost unnecessarily the text ratio. It is very easy to find understandable tutorials on how to use tables on the web. Meaning that other option could be used to create layouts that produce small page files with less HTML tags. Tables are used in over 95% of cases for websites today. HTML tables are easier to understand for the beginner and have a more organized code. Tables also have browser compatibility. Tables in HTML are intended to be used in much the same way that you would use a table in a Microsoft to layout text or graphics in an organised tabular format in your HTML document. It is also to separate content from layout which makes it easier than using divx in CSS. The readability of the code is easier to understand HTML and is better for SEO not to use tables. Tables on the web create newspaper pages using HTML columns.

Benefits of CSS Grid:

If you are planning to create a complex web design such as a magazine or a story/novel then it is better to use CSS. CSS grid frameworks are very popular and sufficient when doing something more complicated and detailed. It helps it be more accessible and well structured therefore it is easier to maintain. CSS Grid systems provide uniformity and consistency in placement of HTML elements. It gives a good visual explanation between page elements. It also makes it easier to apply text callouts and images.  It is a faster loading page with lowered hosting costs and the redesigns are less expensive. It has a competitive edge and easier for teams to maintain. Also, there are no spacer gifs and has a quick website-wide updates. Search engines read CSS better than HTML and tables use more codes. To top it off, for HTML, Google attaches extra weight to keywords contained in tags like H1s and H2s. Therefore, the future of the web is CSS.

Exercise 2

Difference Between CSS and HTML:

Wikipedia.org Definitions:

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used to describe the presentation semantics (the look and formatting) of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML, but the language can also be applied to any kind of XML document, including plain XML,SVG and XUL.

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the main markup language for web pages. HTML elements are the basic building-blocks of webpages. HTML is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags enclosed in angle brackets (like <html>), within the web page content. HTML tags most commonly come in pairs like <h1> and </h1>, although some tags, known as empty elements, are unpaired, for example <img>. The first tag in a pair is the start tag, the second tag is the end tag (they are also called opening tags and closing tags). In between these tags web designers can add text, tags, comments and other types of text-based content.

In my opinion:

-HTML is a more simple way to code with a few key words dedicated to formatting certain ways. CSS was developed to make a bigger page more simplified. You can use CSS in HTML pages, but it is not made for HTML it can also be used on XHTML and XML. In CSS, you are not limited to a single tag, you can create a few to size to the pages the way desired. HTMl is used to put everything in a webpage organized, then CSS is linked. There are more layout possibilities with CSS.
